I woke up this morning with a headache which has stayed with me throughout the day, and despite attempts to dampen it with ibuprofen and caffeine. Because of this, I didn’t last much past noon at my office and I’m sitting now on my couch catching up on the happenings of the internet, and watching Tony Little on the Home Shopping Network (it’s on mute). Daytime TV sucks.

Yesterday I was blessed to have lots of wonderful friends come by for my housewarming party, which really went well, even though the night ended with my kitchen sink being completely clogged (and it still is, actually). The first guests… Maria and her husband and daughter … came as I was still working on pulling myself together, but it was great to see them.

It’s actually funny.. Maria and I went to camp together in like Jr. High, back in Pennsylvania, and although we’ve not really kept in touch, I’ve seen her with some regularity at gatherings of friends, etc. The last time we hung out was May of 06 at Dave and Rachael’s wedding, and since then she got married, had a baby, and moved to Waco. It feels like a lot to catch up on, but it’s been so good to see her and see her beautiful family, and it makes even this far far away place feel a bit like familiar home to have someone here from a previous chapter of my life.

Lots of other people came and went, mostly folks from work, and this one amazing kind woman who I met at a neighborhood halloween party a few weeks ago who remembered about my party and decided to come by. The house looked cute (even though the outside is still in need of a lot of work), the cats behaved, the food was good, and by and large I think people had a good time.

By 7:00pm, when everyone was gone, I was exhausted… but the feeling of exhaustion was quickly overtaken by the feeling of loneliness, as I realized how quiet and empty the house felt. I guess before I didn’t know any different, as I hadn’t had more than 2 people here at a time before, but really… I think it’s a better house when it’s filled with people, and not just me. I need to get housemates (I think I’ve said that before, huh?).

I’m not sure what to do about my clogged up sink! Right now it drains eventually, but it takes a LONG time. I tried the plunger, and then some drain-o overnight followed with hot water. I thought the draino had worked, but it actually is still clogged when I try to run more water down the pipes. I looked up an option of using baking soda and vinegar, but the directions say not to do it if you’ve already tried commercial chemicals. Hmm. I have some safety glasses… maybe I should give it a try and just hope for the best. :) I would take out the curvy part of the pipe under the sink, but there is no way to put a bucket underneath to catch any water, because the pipe is basically laying on the floor of the undersink cabinet. I don’t want to make a huge mess of gross stopped up sink slime. Blech.

(I suppose this is my entrance into home ownership. Lovely.)

Anyway, I’m going to try to take a nap and sleep off the headache. :)

  1. Sounds like you need to snake the drain. You might buy one at the home center and try it yourself. :)

  2. Yeah…I think I need to go get a snake. I do think that I *might* have loosened the clog with repeated plunging, but I don’t trust it to stay good. I need to somehow clear out the pipes completely, and I’m really not sure how to do that. Research time!

  3. I don’t know if you were at camp the time I was there as a maintenance man (since there really wasn’t anything else for me to do). And I tried to clean out the drain in the main girls’ washhouse which is constantly filled with sandy red mud and hair. So I bought industrial grade “draino”. When I poured it in there, it started smoking and firing globs of mud and hair the whole way up to the ceiling. I promptly covered the drain with a bucket and walked away pretending I hadn’t just created a minor environmental disaster. But in the end it worked out and the drain was mostly clear for the rest of the summer. You could try that!

Thanks for the shoutout BTW and I’m so glad you connected with Maria! How is the little chinese boy?

  4. Ww, Dave.. I think I did miss that exciting bathroom event. Seriously, everything I read about drain cleaners (after using one) was that they are basically WMDs. Oops. :)

Maria is great… have you met her little girl? She’s quite an amazing little person. :)
