Baby Surprise Jacket with Collar Instructions

So, I still don’t have buttons, but did want to write up instructions for making a collar like I did on the baby suprised jacket. I really like how it looks, and I think it makes the sweater seem more “finished” than it did before I added the collar.

Anyway, here are the pictures:

And here’s what I did:

After completing all of the instructions for the sweater, binding off and seaming the shoulders, pick and knit around the neck, starting at the left front button band and ending at the right front botton band I picked up 1 stitch for each column of stitches or for each garter row, depending on what part of the neck I was at. On my sweater, that left me with about 48ish stitches.

Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: [knit 8, m1] across
Row 5-7: knit
Row 8: [knit 9, m1] across
Row 9-11: knit
Row 12: [knit 10, m1] across
Row 13-15: knit
Row 16: [knit 11, m1] across
Row 17-19: knit
Row 20: BO in purl

Anyway, if anyone else tries this, I’d love to see the pictures! I saw some sweaters with collars, but didn’t see any instructions, or at least not any with helps on how to get the collar to lay flat (that one purl row) or appear rounded (the increasing every 4th row) so thought this would be helpful. :)

Change colors as you wish, and make the collar bigger if you’d like as well. Be sure to increase every 4th row or so, so that it will lay flat.

  1. Thanks for the directions on how to make the collar. I’m starting this pattern this weekend and it looks so much cuter with the collar on it. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

  2. Love this collar! I’ve used it twice. . . here’s a link to my flickr!
